Summit 2007 Successful!

Over 200 community members with an interest in literacy attended the 2007 Literacy Summit at DeVos Place on October 19. Fritz Crabb, Greater Grand Rapids Reads Coordinator said, “This was by far the best line-up of speakers and workshop presenters in the history of the Literacy Summit. We heard nothing but positive comments from participants.”

We are pleased to report the results of the first Champions of Literacy Awards announced at the Summit. Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell and Grand Rapids Community College President Dr. Juan Olivarez were awarded Grand Champions of Literacy Awards for their work in organizing Greater Grand Rapids Reads. The Champions of Literacy Award went to Read 4 Rent, a grassroots family literacy program at Sibley School. (See below for details.)

On behalf of the Steering and Executive Committees, we thank all of those who made Summit 2007 a success. A full report on the summit and the results of the evaluations will be reported in a future newsletter.
